Former Amazon VP Launches M8 Systems: The AgTech Startup Using AI to Save Water and Fight Wildfires

The next revolution in climate technology isn’t coming from Silicon Valley, it’s rising from California’s Central Valley. M8 Systems, a Bakersfield-based AgTech startup founded by former Amazon Vice President of Engineering Max Safai, is redefining how the world manages water, agriculture, and even fire prevention.

Armed with fewer than ten employees, three patents, and a full-stack AI platform, M8 Systems has already earned the title of “Precision Agriculture and Irrigation Solution of the Year.” It’s an extraordinary milestone for a small team tackling one of the planet’s biggest challenges: how to grow more, waste less, and protect what matters most.

From Cloud to Crops: Data That Acts

Unlike fragmented solutions that only monitor conditions, M8’s system acts on them. The platform integrates sensors, software, and AI to make autonomous irrigation and safety decisions in real time.

“We’ve built everything—from the hardware to the firmware, cloud infrastructure, mobile apps, and machine learning,” says Safai. “Our system doesn’t just monitor conditions—it acts on them.”

That proactive approach is already paying off. In a pilot with the largest grape grower in North America, M8’s irrigation control system reduced water use by nearly 90 percent, consuming just 134,000 gallons compared to more than one million gallons in a traditionally irrigated control plot.

Through seamless integration with third-party soil sensors and M8’s proprietary app, farmers receive live feedback on plant hydration and can let the system automatically control pumps, valves, and sprinklers. “Plants, like people, need to be fed just right,” Safai says. “With M8, you get the data and the tools to do that.”

Expanding from Vineyards to Golf Courses

The technology’s success in vineyards is only the beginning. M8 is now testing its platform with avocado and pineapple farms, two crops with notoriously high-water demands, as well as golf courses, where nightly irrigation can exceed a million gallons.

By enabling individual sprinkler-head control and predictive water scheduling, M8’s system delivers lush greens and thriving crops while cutting costs and conserving resources. The results could transform how entire industries approach irrigation, from agriculture to commercial landscaping.

Fire Defense for the Modern Home

Beyond the farm, M8 is branching into residential innovation with EmberGuard, an AI-powered wildfire protection system designed to safeguard homes in fire-prone regions. When embers are detected, EmberGuard automatically deploys a rooftop suppressant spray, providing critical defense even when homeowners are away.

The company also previewed its smart leak detection system, which instantly shuts off a home’s main water line when a leak is detected, preventing costly flood damage and mold.

Together, these innovations make M8 one of the few startups addressing the entire lifecycle of water management, from conservation to catastrophe prevention.

From Silicon Valley to Soil

Safai’s journey from Amazon’s engineering halls to California’s farmlands began with a personal story. When a family friend lost their avocado farm due to unaffordable irrigation costs, he realized that the same technologies used to optimize data centers could optimize water, arguably the planet’s most vital resource.

“We’re not a piecemeal solution,” he says. “We’re the only company offering a truly integrated platform, from the field to the cloud to the fingertips of the user.”

That holistic vision, coupled with M8’s ability to deliver measurable savings, has caught the attention of investors and policymakers alike. The startup was recently spotlighted on Cheddar TV’s “Go Fund Yourself,” bringing its message of sustainability and innovation to a national audience.

Scaling Toward a Smarter, Safer Future

With early traction in agriculture and growing demand for its residential products, M8 is now raising a $2 million seed round to expand manufacturing, distribution, and engineering capacity. The company also continues to partner with Cal State Bakersfield to train the next generation of local tech talent.

From drought resilience to wildfire prevention, M8 Systems is proving that technology can do more than automate tasks, it can protect people, preserve resources, and power a more sustainable planet.
